For expectant mamas, looking after their body and their precocious bump is a top priority. There are a hundred different ways to do this, from hip green diets to top-notch fitness classes. One of the most rewarding and soothing methods though has to be Yoga.
Prenatal yoga has been the rage around our tiny island, with expectant mama’s utilising the classes to prepare themselves for the physical demands of labour and motherhood.
However, there are a variety of other classes soon-to-be mamas can explore!
1. Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga benefits practitioners of all levels, and pregnant women, by helping them obtain a calmer nervous system and a gradual deep opening. Typically consisting of 5 to 6 poses held for a couple of minutes, this yoga class brings in gentle backbends, light twists and a gradual deep opening.
Great for expectant mothers who need a gentle stretch!
2. Yoga Therapy
A gentle class involving poses that activate your muscles and mind while calming you down, Yoga Therapy is ideal for mothers who feel tensed.
Yoga therapy could consist of gentle to slightly tougher movements, meditation or visualisation practices and physical postures that address areas experiencing stiffness.
3. Yin Yoga
Focused on stretching the connective tissues, Yin Yoga teaches students to hold every pose for a couple of minutes to give a deep stretch and release to connective tissues.
Ideal for mama-to-bes feeling tension or stiffness!
4. Pranayama
Pranayama classes are focused on mastering control of breath, the vital life force, through a series of breathing techniques. The classes cleanse the body of physical and emotional blocks that might be holding us back.
These classes are best for mamas experiencing a lot of mental stress as they help to refocus the mind.
5. Yoga Nidra
The best soother in its line, Yoga Nidra is a type of guided meditation class that utilises the state between waking and sleeping, the “about to sleep” state to relieve stress.
This deep relaxation quietens the mind and increased awareness of the heart beat and breathing.
