1. Getting Started
There are many yoga props available in the market to aid you in your yoga practice, but what is the one prop that you must have? I’m sure you know the answer too.. A Yoga Mat!
A common concern for practicing yoga without a teacher is your alignment. “Am I doing it correctly? Where do I position my hands and feet?” Here is a solution for you: An Alignment Mat!
Some examples on how the alignment mat can help you:
- Downward Dog – Place your hands and feet on the horizontal lines on two ends of the alignment mat. This helps you find the right position for your yoga pose.
- Upward Bow Pose (Chakrasana) – Stretch your spine with this pose by finding the correct mark for you hands and feet.

2. Warm Up
Sun salutation is a series of yoga postures that help to strengthen and align the body. It is often used to warm up your body before proceeding to your yoga practice. Harmonise your breathing and yoga postures by inhale to stretch and exhale when withdraw. This series of yoga poses also serves as meditation and helps quicken our blood flow while calming our mind.
Benefits of Sun Salutation:
- Prepares your body for yoga
- Reduces depression, anxiety and stress
- Builds mental focus and deep breathing
3. Practice
It might be intimidating to create your own sequence. “What do I do now? What pose should I practice?” You can either select your favourite poses to practice or poses you are trying to master.
For instance, I customise my personal yoga practice based on my needs. Sitting by the desk for long hours have caused strain on my neck, shoulder and lower back. I will curate a series of postures that targets and relieve pain on these areas.
4. Pranayama
Breathing is essential and understanding the right technique can improve your body drastically. Pranayama is a breathing exercise where Prana refers to “energy” and Yama means “control”. The control of breaths can help increase the energy of your body and bring several benefits to your body.
Benefits of Pranayama:
- Improves blood circulation
- Improves mental health
- Relieves asthma symptoms
- Relieves stress
- Strengthens respiratory system
5. Cool Down
Take 10 minutes to cool down after an intensive workout. Not forgetting to drink a glass of water to stay hydrated!
Enjoy and have fun!
