Yoga is gaining popularity worldwide. Many people are benefitting from their regular yoga practice, both mentally and physically. (Click here to read more about the benefits of yoga.) Unfortunately, there are still a handful who are unwilling to give yoga a shot due to their misconceptions about yoga.
Here are some common misconceptions that people have about yoga:
⊗ Yoga is for women only
Fun fact: When yoga was first discovered, they were traditionally practiced by men.
Undoubtedly, yoga is more widely accepted by females, as seen in the ratio of female to male students in a class. However, yoga is increasingly popular among men as it helps them build strength, flexibility and balance, allowing them to reach muscles they never knew they had.
Yoga is for everyone, regardless of your fitness level, age, ethnicity and gender.
⊗ You must be flexible
Yoga is not just about bending or twisting your body in what looks like impossible poses. Yoga requires strength, balance and flexibility. If you have one of these trait, use it to help you improve the other areas! Build strength and flexibility as you practice!
Flexibility is not a pre-requisite for yoga practice.
⊗ Yoga is easy
There is more to yoga than gentle stretching. The difficulty level varies with the different types of yoga.
Unlike other forms of exercise, yoga requires mind and body coordination. If you are looking for something more challenging, try ashtanga yoga!

⊗ Yoga is slow and boring
As mentioned in my previous point, there are different styles of yoga. Looking for something that will get your heart rate up and burn calories? Try HIIT Yoga! HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training and has become a popular workout method due to its efficiency and effectiveness. Combined with yoga, HIIT Yoga brings about more cardio-intensive workout while stretching and lengthening the body. The perfect complementary pair that helps to build on stamina and target neglected muscles.
