YOGA WHEEL VS YOGA BLOCK – WHICH ONE’S BETTER?

YOGA WHEEL VS YOGA BLOCK – WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?

Props are meants to assist in your Yoga practice.  In every Yoga studios in Singapore, you might probably be able to find stacks of Yoga blocks and Yoga belts being the most accessible to all in any Yoga studio. Each prop gives you a different ‘assistance’ and it will definitely serves the right purpose if you know how to use it correctly. In this version of article, we’ll look into the differences of Yoga Block & Yoga Wheel in general as well as an add on backbend practices.

So how do you know then which is suitable for you; if in any case you decide to purchase one for home practices. Let’s look into the following for your consideration.

1) SIZE

Yoga wheel is much obvious bigger and heavier than a block. Its also ‘harder’ in the sense that since the material are very much wood based, giving you a solid foundation whenever pressure is applied onto it. Well, Yoga block seems to be a better choice if you need to packed it in your practice elsewhere.

2) PURPOSE

You might find some similarity in using the two props but you should also note on the main purpose of each prop is designed with its intended assistance by the creator. The round shape of Yoga Wheel allows for opening onto your ‘spine’ (or back) including shoulders as well as inversion practice. If you’re creative enough, you might even consider Yoga Wheel as your core exercise.  Yoga blocks on the other hand is well served not just backbend, but on other asanas including standing postures (I.e Triangle pose), vajrasana (due to tight hip flexor or ankles), hamstring support (when moving into half or full split). So it really depends on which one is needed more in your practice and as the saying goes ‘sometimes you can’t have the best of both world’ all the time! But you do also need to look into whether you are a beginner in Yoga (blocks is preferred) or a regular practitioner (wheel is good).

3) COST

You might also want to consider the cost of a Yoga Wheel with a Yoga Block. And we need not say who’s the winner in this category (the less expensive one of course) 😛

4) SAFETY

Generally, Yoga Block might be a ‘safer’ option for practice since it is used in most Yoga classes. Yoga Wheel though requires a set of knowledge and understanding anatomically since it could give you a very deep practice and you might probably experience the changes in your entire spine through backbending sequences.

5) BACK BEND PRACTICE

And we’re gonna highlight that Yoga Wheel is mostly suitable for heart-opening sequences as the way it is designed. You might have fear that the opening could be very deep for some. By looking into the stability of the Wheel (just like a hard-case travel luggage), you would be able to do a forearm stand pose by trying to land the legs on the wheel. In fact, it is best practice with a certified teacher in a Yoga studio before deciding to do it on your own.

In fact, the circular shape of Yoga Wheel allows your spine to naturally blend in with your practice since we probably need a ‘curvy’ back bend whereas for Yoga Block, it is good for those who would specifically like to target your spinal area before moving into a deeper practice sonce you have established a firm foundation of back bend in particular Wheel pose.
